About the IAP

The Independent Assessment Process (IAP) is an out of court, alternative dispute resolution process that resolves claims of abuse suffered at Indian Residential Schools (IRS). Former students of IRS who experienced sexual or serious physical abuse may be eligible for compensation through the IAP.

The IAP is one element of the IRS Settlement Agreement, which is the largest class action settlement in Canadian history and is expected to bring a fair and lasting resolution of the legacy of IRS. The Settlement Agreement was entered into by representatives from various Aboriginal organizations, church representatives, legal representatives for former students, and the Government of Canada, and was approved by the courts.

The IAP was developed to provide a claimant centred process for the resolution of individual or group claims of abuse suffered at IRS.

The IAP is a fair, impartial and neutral adjudication process that is committed to the resolution of claims.

IAP applications will be accepted until September 19, 2012.
